Occupy Pittsburgh: A Peaceful Village in Revolt

By Carolyn Elliott
On a grey fall day, the encampment of Occupy Pittsburgh at Mellon Green looks astoundingly beautiful for something that consists primarily of tents, tarps, mud, straw, cardboard and gumption.   Its beauty, perhaps, comes from the love and fresh sense of creative purpose shared by its inhabitants and visitors.
On October 21, 2011 the camp boasts 78 sleeping tents, not counting the tents set aside for communal purposes of food preparation, media communication, medic care, equipment storage, child care, and comfort supplies.
