You can't evict an idea whose time has come
Occupy Pittsburgh is implementing plans to sustain the occupation and we need your help!
Evictions and police action against Occupy camps have been spreading across the country ever since Occupy Oakland was violently evicted on November 14th.
In the last 24 hours some members of Occupy Pittsburgh heard that a forcible removal of our encampment may be imminent. But due to the mobilization of Occupy Pittsburgh supporters, we received notification from Mayor Luke Ravenstahl’s office that the Pittsburgh Police will not move to evict unless they receive a court order.
Moreover, if we are to sustain the occupation in the coming months, we need to clean and "winterize" the camp to protect our health and safety.
So what can you do to help?
- Come and camp at Mellon Green (corner of Grant St. and 6th Ave.).
- Be ready to converge at Mellon Green to protect our freedom of speech if that becomes necessary. Watch for official email alerts and posts to occupypittsburgh.org. Text 'occupy' to 292929 to receive text message updates from the Occupy Pittsburgh Emergency Alert System. Please look to the Facebook Occupy Pittsburgh community page for official updates and please be selective with other sources.
- Call Mayor Luke Ravenstahl In the City of Pittsburgh, dial 3-1-1. Outside of Pittsburgh, call 412-255-2621 and ask him to come out publicly in support of Occupy Pittsburgh.
- Join us on December 10 at 1:00 pm at the Kingsley Center in East Liberty (doors open at noon) for an indoor rally followed by a march to demand Human Rights, not Corporate Rights!
- Join us on December 11, anytime from 10am to 10pm, for a Day of Action to clean, rebuild and winterize the camp at Mellon Green. We need to do this for our survival and it could also pre-empt any police or BNY justification to clear the camp on the grounds that the camp is a threat to public health and safety.
Other things you can do:
- Donate to our winterization fund.
- Help us procure supplies - read this pdf. Email winterization@occupypittsburgh.org if you have stuff.
